2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kingwood Christian finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-9 record. With their 1-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class AA region one, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Kingwood Christian's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Autauga Academy by a score of 61-0. The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2009. It marked the first time since the 2013 season that the Lions qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Kingwood Christian has gone a combined 31-45. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class AA over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Kingwood Christian has managed to compile a record of 95-158. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class AA and 34th in the AISA. Sheldon Ward leaves Kingwood Christian after two seasons with a 5-16 record. Todd Bradford has been hired to replace Sheldon Ward at Kingwood. Bradford is a graduate of Morgan Academy and was the head coach one season at Lowndes Academy. Coach Bradford's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 1-9 (10.0%). The Kingwood Christian Lions will play in Class AA region one during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Lions if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Kingwood Christian will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Tyler Henderson returns for his Sophomore season after completing 135 of 249 passes for 1,937 yards and 12 touchdowns. Junior Noah Seiger returns after catching 25 passes for 391 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sophomore Antonio Ruiz returns after catching 23 passes for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Lions open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Springwood on Friday, August 25 at Springwood Stadium. Last year the Springwood Wildcats finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class AAA region one. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Chambers Academy by a score of 41-6. Kingwood Christian and Springwood have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Lions have a 3-3-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Springwood winning by a score of 26-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
